GM Unveils the Australian Versions of the Cruze and Volt

GM has unveiled the Australian versions of the Cruze and Volt as the Holden Cruze and Holden Volt.

The Australian version of the Chevy Cruze features a new grille and badges. Other than that everything else is pretty much the same. The Holden Cruze is powered by a 1.8L 4 cylinder petrol or an optional 2.0L turbo charged diesel.

The Holden Volt is nearly identical to the Chevy Volt besides new badges and the steering wheel being on the opposite side of the car.

If GM Survives Should Saturn Simply Disappear?

Everything is in a "state of flux" right now for the U.S. automakers. Even if they manage to secure loans from the U.S. government and possibly the Candian government, there will still be major changes.

There have been many reports and rumors that GM may end up dropping or scaling back the slow selling Saturn, Pontiac and GMC brands. In its plan that it submitted to the U.S. Congress last week, GM stated that it is "exploring alternatives" for the Saturn brand. Although Saturn currently has a strong product lineup, the brand has failed to meet sales expectations.

Many people would assume that GM should just cut its losses with the Saturn brand and move on, but doing so would cost GM at least $1 billion in all the dealer buyouts.

VIDEO: What Will Happen if the Big Three U.S. Automakers Collapse?

GM has put together an informational video of what it predicts will happen if the Big Three automakers all fail next year.

Some highlights:
-If all three fail next year it will result in 3 million U.S. jobs lost in the first year
-Total governement tax loss over three years = $156.4 billion
-The U.S. GDP would drop 4 percent, compare that to the fact that the current economic downturn was caused by a .3 percent drop
-One out of every ten jobs in the U.S. relies on the U.S. auto industry

Just when we thought GM was done with the sort of badge engineering they did in the 80's they go and unveil the Pontiac G3, which is basically a Chevy Aveo with a new grille.

It's Official the 2009 Chevy Corvette ZR1 puts out 638 HP!

GM officially unveiled the 2009 Chevy Corvette ZR1 at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, but at that time the automaker had yet finalize the certification of the 6.2L LS9 V8.

I'm sure you're as surprised as nearly everyone else in the automotive world when you see a headline like that. Well apparently the new 2008 (US) Focus is selling beyond expectations and Ford is going to increase production of the vehicle.

Limited Edition Corvette Competition

GM Europe will introduce a limited edition Corvette Competition model, designed to bring the Corvette’s success in the American Le Mans Series GT1 class to the street. Featuring a standard 6.2-litter LS3 V8 engine and six-speed manual gearbox shared with the C6 Coupe.

The Competition will receive a number of appearance upgrades, including some unique dark-grey alloy wheels, dual twin exhaust pipes, honeycomb grille and the rear spoiler from the Z06.

GM Engineer Explains the Making of the ZR-1 LS9

GM’s objective of the ZR-1 Project was to achieve 100 hp per litres using the 6.2L small block V8.

The new ZR-1 supercharged 6.2L small block V8 packs at least 620 hp and nearly 600 lb-ft of torque, and its should finally catapult the Corvette into supercar status. Autoblog was lucky enough to spend some time with Ron Meegan, the small block assistant chief engineer of GM’s small block engine program, who gave them an engineer’s explanation of the supercharged LS9 engine.

Watch the video below to learn why GM didn’t use the 7.0L V8 from the Z06 and why the Eaton’s next generation TVS supercharger is so special.

Is it the End of the Line for Mercury? Should Ford Turn Off Mercury's Life Support?

For years there has been speculation that Ford may eventually kill off Mercury due to weak sales. The current Mercury lineup is aging and there seems to be little new projects in the works. Could this mean that Ford is finally letting Mercury die a slow death?
