Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s a Ducati Hypermotard S!

| вторник, 6 октября 2009 г.

Let’s just go ahead and get this out of the way: In my humble opinion, there are few records as all-around awesome as Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols. I had a vinyl copy of this album before I even had a turntable, and there was a period of about a year where I would wake up and play “EMI” before I did anything else. So I was stoked when I saw a press release titled “Ducati Welcomes Sex Pistols Guitarist Steve Jones into the Family.” But I also cracked up, because seriously, when the Sex Pistols were in their heyday, the odds that any corporation would have welcomed them anywhere were about as likely as Rick James being elected president. According to the press release, Jones took delivery of a Hypermotard S at Ducati headquarters, which tells me he’s just as big of a bad-ass off-stage as he his on it. He’s also set to revive DJing duties in Los Angeles this fall—he hosted Jonesy’s Jukebox on Indie 103.1 FM from 2004 until January of this year—and you can bet your ass I’ll be listening. Hit the jump for the full text and to see what Jones had to say about his new Ducati.

Ducati Welcomes Sex Pistols Guitarist Steve Jones into the Family, Famed Rocker Takes Delivery of Ducati Hypermotard S

Cupertino, Calif. (October 2, 2009) – Ducati North America announced today that avid motorcyclist, Sex Pistols guitarist, and host of LA radio’s beloved “Jonesey’s Jukebox” Steve Jones, has taken delivery of a new customized Hypermotard S at Ducati headquarters.

Known for his genre defining music and straight talk, Jones recently expanded his bike collection to include the rambunctious Ducati Hypermotard S due to its aggressive styling and exceptional fun factor. Steve had been eyeing the model since first riding one at Ducati North America headquarters earlier this Spring. He bought the motorcycle to celebrate his return to the Los Angeles airwaves this fall.

“I’ve always admired Ducati from a distance but never found something that suits me. That all changed after that first ride on the Hypermotard. I knew I had to have her. All my mates are jealous- and that suits me just fine!”

Residing in a perfect motorcycle hot spot, Jones can be found carving his Hypermotard S along Southern California’s coast and canyons.

The Disadvantages of Buying a New Vehicle

|

When the time comes to purchase a new car, we ofter question ourselves on whether we should buy a used vehicle or a new one.  They both have their upsides and downsides, but it really depends on your financial situation as well.  If you’re thinking about purchasing a brand new vehicle, you may want to consider what the disadvantages of doing so are.

How buying a new vehicle can hurt you:

Expensive – First of all, buying a new vehicle is a lot more expensive than buying a used one.  If you have the extra money, and money isn’t an issue you should consider it.  Although, if you’re kind of tight on money, consider buying used.

When you buy new, your monthly payments will be much higher than if you bought used.

Money down – When you buy a new vehicle, you will usually have to put a lot of money down, especially if the vehicle is really expensive.  They want to make sure you have some money saved up, and can pay for this car.

Rates – When you buy a new vehicle, your interest rates and insurance rates will usually sky rocket.  You will most likely owe a lot of money so you will have a higher interest rate, and the insurance to keep your car in shape in case of an accident will also be more expensive than if you bought used.

Driving away – The second you drive the car off the lot, you will have just lost a couple hundred dollars if not thousands.  The fact that it’s not “brand new” anymore will really lower the value of your vehicle.  So, if you don’t want to loose a large amount of money, but save money instead, buy used.

As you can see, there are quite a few disadvantages to buying a new vehicle.  It is always a good idea to consider buying a used vehicle even if it has 5,000 miles on it.  Just the fact that it’s now “used” will save you a ton of money!

The Contender: Toyota reveals new TF109

|

Click above to view high-res image gallery of the Toyota TF109

Following Ferrari's unveiling of its new F60, Toyota is the second team to release its new challenger for the 2009 Formula One season. Called the TF109, it's the only car unveiled exclusively online without a public reveal. Of course, looking at it, you could paint the remaining white panels red (and move the wing mirrors to the sidepods) and it would look pretty much like Ferrari's. That's because all the cars have to conform to the same set of new rules, so it was back to the drawing board for all the teams. Naturally that means it'll be hard to predict which teams and which drivers will have adapted to the new rules and new cars the best, but Toyota's veteran driver Jarno Trulli is confident that the team is due for its first victory this season.

Wait, what? Yeah, despite pouring unprecedented heaps of cash at its Cologne, Germany-based team, Toyota has yet to win a grand prix. They came the closest last season, finishing a respectable fifth place in the constructors' championship just behind the former champions at Renault, but together with his team-mate Timo Glock, the 2007 GP2 champion, Trulli hopes this year will change the team's fortunes and translate its vast resources into trophies. And this is the car with which they hope to do it. Press release after the jump and images in the gallery below.

Seven different engines will be offered on the Polo, four gas and three diesel, five of which are new.

C’était un Rendez-Vous (It Was an Appointment): The Complete Film

| четверг, 1 октября 2009 г.

I suggest watching in full screen mode

C’était un Rendez-Vous is a 8 minute French film from 1976. It shows a manic drive through Paris in the early hours of the morning, accompanied by sounds of a high-revving engine, gear changes and squealing tires. Nothing was staged, it was an actual drive, and after the film was released, the director was supposedly arrested. Pedestrians and pigeons are passed and nearly ran over, red lights are ignored, one-way streets are driven up the wrong way… it’s just beautiful high-speed lunatic driving.

The film was shot in a single take by the director and driver, Claude Lelouch. He used a gyro-stabilized camera mounted on the bumper of his 6.9 liter Mercedes-Benz 450SEL.

The sound effects, which include gear changes up to 5th gear, as well as heel-and-toe down-shifting were actually taken from Lelouch’s Ferrari 275GTB. Lelouch claims he got up to 140 mph during the run, although people who have tried to calculate the speed have come up with different results. Some say he never topped 85 mph, while others estimate the car peaked at 135 mph. Either way, it’s a fantastic film.

Another version, non-widescreen:

Honda has officially announced that 2009 will be the final model year for the Honda S2000.

The S2000 was originally introduced in 1999 as a 2000 model.

"The S2000 is a sports car designed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "It raised the bar for all future roadsters, and it's already considered a classic by many Honda fans."

So sad....

Hummer-Branded Piaggio MP3 Pushes Brand Even Smaller [Piaggio MP3]

|

When we saw the Hummer Dodge Neon H2SE earlier, we thought it was funny for a homebrew "customization." Then we saw this Hummer-branded Piaggio MP3. It's just plain weird.

In case you aren't familiar with the Piaggio MP3, it's an Italian-built three-wheeled motor scooter that can lean through a corner but maintains rock solid stability not available with a motorcycle. The brilliantly engineered but goofy looking scooter has been available in a large part of the rest of the world as the Gilera Fuoco for years but just recently went on sale in the United States.

In any case, this Hummer H2-branded example was spotted this morning on the mean streets of New York City on 32nd between 6th and 7th. The dress up is applied to the MP3 500 model, this biggest, brawniest version of the scooter (sort of like being the coolest kid at the Mathlympics) and consists of a "Hummer H2" sticker over the cowl badge, chipping "Piaggio" off the nameplate, and applying a Hummer decal to the top box at the back. The funny thing is, with all the tough-guy stuff on the MP3 500 like a grille guard, flat black color scheme and headlight guards, a branding partnership between Piaggio and Hummer seems like it might make sense. (Hat tip to Steven!)

Eliica Eight-Wheeled Electric Car: Heading To Production Because The Tesla Isn't Fast Enough [Electric Car]

|

Is the Tesla Roadster not exotic enough for you? Does the six-wheeled Covini C6W have two few wheels? Try a four-door eight-wheeled electric car. It's called the Eliica and it may be heading for production.

The Eliica –- short for Electric Lithium-Ion battery Car - is an impressive eight-wheeled beast of a ride that outnumbers the Covini C6W on the weirdness scale. Powered by eight in-wheel electric motors producing 60 KW or roughly 80 hp each, the Eliica will sprint to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds and will power on to 100mph in just 3 seconds more. That’s faster than a Porsche 911 Turbo! And with four doors! Unfortunately all this power costs some dough and you’ll be able to pick up your very own Eliica for $255,000 pending development sponsorship.

Currently only two of these Japanese arachnids exist, but with the help of just a little more corporate sponsorship, the Eliica team can build 200 of them. That’s enough for at least two in the Jalopnik garage and one for yours!

Initially developed in 2003 by environmental engineer, Hiroshi Shimizu, the Eliica uses lithium-ion batteries to reach an estimated top speed of 250 mph and a range of 200 miles. Shimizu developed his first electric car over 20 years ago by converting a gasoline-powered sedan to electric drive.

We’re crossing our fingers for the Eliica to receive sponsorship because we really want to take it for a spin. Check out the video below to see the awesome Eliica in action.

Short Documentary On The Eliica Electric Car

Press Release:

Dr. Hiroshi Shimizu built his first electric car more than 20 years ago, converting a gasoline-powered sedan to electric drive.

An environmental engineer by training, he became increasingly interested in pushing the boundaries of electric car technology; the most recent manifestation being the Eliica, a powerful, eight-wheeled super car with a 230 mph (370 km/h) top speed. Each of the eight wheels is driven by a 60kW (80 hp) electric motor.

First conceived in 2003, Shimizu and his engineering students built a pair of Eliicas for an estimated $320,000. One version is considered a "speed" model; the second, the "acceleration" model. The goal of the Keio University team is to set the world speed record of 400 km/h (250 mph).

Both models utilize lithium ion batteries and have a working range of 200 miles (320 km).

Interest in Dr. Shimizu's efforts apparently has been recently rekindled as the government of Japan recognizes the importance of electric vehicles. The team would like to receive corporate sponsorship to build 200 of the four-passenger vehicles for an estimated price of 30 million Yen or approximately $255,000.
