Honda has officially announced that 2009 will be the final model year for the Honda S2000.

The S2000 was originally introduced in 1999 as a 2000 model.

"The S2000 is a sports car designed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "It raised the bar for all future roadsters, and it's already considered a classic by many Honda fans."

So sad....

Hummer-Branded Piaggio MP3 Pushes Brand Even Smaller [Piaggio MP3]

|

When we saw the Hummer Dodge Neon H2SE earlier, we thought it was funny for a homebrew "customization." Then we saw this Hummer-branded Piaggio MP3. It's just plain weird.

In case you aren't familiar with the Piaggio MP3, it's an Italian-built three-wheeled motor scooter that can lean through a corner but maintains rock solid stability not available with a motorcycle. The brilliantly engineered but goofy looking scooter has been available in a large part of the rest of the world as the Gilera Fuoco for years but just recently went on sale in the United States.

In any case, this Hummer H2-branded example was spotted this morning on the mean streets of New York City on 32nd between 6th and 7th. The dress up is applied to the MP3 500 model, this biggest, brawniest version of the scooter (sort of like being the coolest kid at the Mathlympics) and consists of a "Hummer H2" sticker over the cowl badge, chipping "Piaggio" off the nameplate, and applying a Hummer decal to the top box at the back. The funny thing is, with all the tough-guy stuff on the MP3 500 like a grille guard, flat black color scheme and headlight guards, a branding partnership between Piaggio and Hummer seems like it might make sense. (Hat tip to Steven!)

The Spam Mobile, Peepmobile And Other Bizarre Marketing Vehicles [Novelties]

|

Anyone who has been to a public festival has seen a Red Bull-themed Mini or, if lucky, the Wienermobile. But have you ever seen the Peepmobile? But wait, there's more!

The folks over at Mentalfloss have assembled quite the list, including The Zippo Car and the unfortunately named Peepmobile, which distributes marshmallow candies and not free looks for leering peeps. We're glad the Voxmobile made the list. But where's the Truly Nolen VW Limo? [Mental Floss]

Thanks to a few sites breaking the embargo, we now have an early look at the 2010 Jaguar XFR that will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show.

The 2010 Jaguar XFR is powered by 510 horsepower 5.0L AJ-V8 GEN III engine that features with a 6-generation Roots-type twin vortex (TVS) supercharger. That power propels the car from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

The XFR also features 20-inch Nevis alloy wheels and comes in eight colors: Botanical Green, Indigo, Kyanite Blue, Liquid Silver, Lunar Grey, Porcelain and Salsa.

Eliica Eight-Wheeled Electric Car: Heading To Production Because The Tesla Isn't Fast Enough [Electric Car]

|

Is the Tesla Roadster not exotic enough for you? Does the six-wheeled Covini C6W have two few wheels? Try a four-door eight-wheeled electric car. It's called the Eliica and it may be heading for production.

The Eliica –- short for Electric Lithium-Ion battery Car - is an impressive eight-wheeled beast of a ride that outnumbers the Covini C6W on the weirdness scale. Powered by eight in-wheel electric motors producing 60 KW or roughly 80 hp each, the Eliica will sprint to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds and will power on to 100mph in just 3 seconds more. That’s faster than a Porsche 911 Turbo! And with four doors! Unfortunately all this power costs some dough and you’ll be able to pick up your very own Eliica for $255,000 pending development sponsorship.

Currently only two of these Japanese arachnids exist, but with the help of just a little more corporate sponsorship, the Eliica team can build 200 of them. That’s enough for at least two in the Jalopnik garage and one for yours!

Initially developed in 2003 by environmental engineer, Hiroshi Shimizu, the Eliica uses lithium-ion batteries to reach an estimated top speed of 250 mph and a range of 200 miles. Shimizu developed his first electric car over 20 years ago by converting a gasoline-powered sedan to electric drive.

We’re crossing our fingers for the Eliica to receive sponsorship because we really want to take it for a spin. Check out the video below to see the awesome Eliica in action.

Short Documentary On The Eliica Electric Car

Press Release:

Dr. Hiroshi Shimizu built his first electric car more than 20 years ago, converting a gasoline-powered sedan to electric drive.

An environmental engineer by training, he became increasingly interested in pushing the boundaries of electric car technology; the most recent manifestation being the Eliica, a powerful, eight-wheeled super car with a 230 mph (370 km/h) top speed. Each of the eight wheels is driven by a 60kW (80 hp) electric motor.

First conceived in 2003, Shimizu and his engineering students built a pair of Eliicas for an estimated $320,000. One version is considered a "speed" model; the second, the "acceleration" model. The goal of the Keio University team is to set the world speed record of 400 km/h (250 mph).

Both models utilize lithium ion batteries and have a working range of 200 miles (320 km).

Interest in Dr. Shimizu's efforts apparently has been recently rekindled as the government of Japan recognizes the importance of electric vehicles. The team would like to receive corporate sponsorship to build 200 of the four-passenger vehicles for an estimated price of 30 million Yen or approximately $255,000.

Detroit 2009: Dodge Circuit EV [w/VIDEO]

The circuit is one of those things that makes us go "Hmmm." It is not particularly attractive, not particularly innovative, and not particularly noteworthy except that it's an electric car with "Dodge" written on it. The 200kW (268 hp) motor get the "Tangoreen" 2-door to 60 in less than five seconds, and the quarter-mile is a 13-second affair.

Still, as the continuation of what might be considered last summer's cynical exercise we have nothing against the Dodge Circuit -- but unless they price it a great deal lower than a Tesla or make it a great deal cooler than Lotus' (possibly) coming range-extended Evora Europa, then we aren't sure what to do with the Circuit for now. You can read the press release after the jump and check out the high-res gallery of photos below... But for our money, the Chrysler 200C Concept is what the future of the Pentastar is all about.

Truck Driver Tries to Avoid Tolls with Home Made License Plate Flipper

|

According to MythBusters, it’s pretty much impossible to beat speed cameras. They tried that spray-on license plate obscuring liquid, they tried that clear cover that’s supposedly opaque at certain angles, they even tried going too fast for the camera to catch you… none of them worked. So their conclusion was you can’t beat city hall.

But Jamie wasn’t satisfied with that answer, so he built something that really would work: A License Plate Flipper. He made it look pretty easy too, although they make everything look pretty easy on that show

There are plenty of places online that sell license plate flippers, like PlateFlipper.com. It seems pretty simple though, if you have any sort of mechanical inclination. I would just buy some actuators and hook it up to a little 9v battery on the inside of the trunk, slap it all together, and be good to go. Maybe even get a wireless switch on the dash. Sounds fun, right?

Well, Orlando Payano, a truck driver from Queens, NY, didn’t go to the trouble of getting the actuators and soldering the electronics. Apparently, Mr. Payano mounted his license plate on a hinged piece of metal then ran an attached cable through his cigarette lighter. When he went through a toll booth, all he had to do is pull out his cigarette lighter, and FLAP, no more license plate. No more tolls. Now that is simplicity.

Everything was going smoothly until a Port Authority officer spotted Payano’s disappearing plate in action. I tip my hat to you, Orlando; that was good work. Damn The Man.

ABG First Drive: 2010 Honda Insight, 63.4 mpg!

2009 is shaping up to be a big year for hybrids as Ford launches the Fusion and Milan hybrids, Toyota brings us the third generation Prius and the new Lexus HS250h and Honda revives the Insight brand. The original Insight was the first hybrid to make it to the US market but it was never very commercially successful. Honda only managed to sell about 18,000 Insights worldwide over 6 years. The new Insight is a whole different story.

This time around, Honda has created a five seat hatchback that it says will be the most affordable hybrid in the world. Honda is targeting world wide sales of 200,000 Insights a year with half of those going to North America. AutoblogGreen spent a day driving the new Insight in and around Carefree AZ just before the holidays. Unlike the Prius which is efficient but has never been particularly appealing to drive, the Insight makes good use of its Fit based chassis for fun steering and handling and still manages to get outstanding fuel efficiency. ABG managed to achieve an average 63.4 mpg on an efficiency drive and 44 mpg on a mountain road pleasure drive. Read all about the new Insight at AutoblogGreen.
