Truck Driver Tries to Avoid Tolls with Home Made License Plate Flipper

According to MythBusters, it’s pretty much impossible to beat speed cameras. They tried that spray-on license plate obscuring liquid, they tried that clear cover that’s supposedly opaque at certain angles, they even tried going too fast for the camera to catch you… none of them worked. So their conclusion was you can’t beat city hall.

But Jamie wasn’t satisfied with that answer, so he built something that really would work: A License Plate Flipper. He made it look pretty easy too, although they make everything look pretty easy on that show

There are plenty of places online that sell license plate flippers, like PlateFlipper.com. It seems pretty simple though, if you have any sort of mechanical inclination. I would just buy some actuators and hook it up to a little 9v battery on the inside of the trunk, slap it all together, and be good to go. Maybe even get a wireless switch on the dash. Sounds fun, right?

Well, Orlando Payano, a truck driver from Queens, NY, didn’t go to the trouble of getting the actuators and soldering the electronics. Apparently, Mr. Payano mounted his license plate on a hinged piece of metal then ran an attached cable through his cigarette lighter. When he went through a toll booth, all he had to do is pull out his cigarette lighter, and FLAP, no more license plate. No more tolls. Now that is simplicity.

Everything was going smoothly until a Port Authority officer spotted Payano’s disappearing plate in action. I tip my hat to you, Orlando; that was good work. Damn The Man.
