If you should happen to see a blue 1973 Triumph Stag on the road, heading in a roughly westerly direction, it may well be that you’ve crossed paths with Mr. John Macartney. John has traveled from his home in the U.K. to make a 10,000-mile crossing of the U.S. in order to raise awareness of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, and to raise funds for three PTSD nonprofits in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. He left from Florida on June 27, and as of July 4 had made it as far as Montgomery, Alabama.
The Stag was purchased with money donated by Triumph enthusiasts from around the world, and restored by talented and generous volunteers from the Illinois Sports Owners Assocation. Things were looking dark when the Stag’s overdrive gearbox self-destructed during a shakedown drive; that’s when Victoria British and John Esposito of Quantum Mechanics leaped into their superhero Spandex and supplied the needed parts.
John is planning to meet up with other enthuiasts along the route who will accompany him from stop to stop. You can read John’s dispatches from the road and see videos at the Triumph Trans-American Charity Drive website. If he keeps to schedule, he’ll be visting with us at Hemmings on July 16.
