C’était un Rendez-Vous (It Was an Appointment): The Complete Film

| четверг, 1 октября 2009 г.

I suggest watching in full screen mode

C’était un Rendez-Vous is a 8 minute French film from 1976. It shows a manic drive through Paris in the early hours of the morning, accompanied by sounds of a high-revving engine, gear changes and squealing tires. Nothing was staged, it was an actual drive, and after the film was released, the director was supposedly arrested. Pedestrians and pigeons are passed and nearly ran over, red lights are ignored, one-way streets are driven up the wrong way… it’s just beautiful high-speed lunatic driving.

The film was shot in a single take by the director and driver, Claude Lelouch. He used a gyro-stabilized camera mounted on the bumper of his 6.9 liter Mercedes-Benz 450SEL.

The sound effects, which include gear changes up to 5th gear, as well as heel-and-toe down-shifting were actually taken from Lelouch’s Ferrari 275GTB. Lelouch claims he got up to 140 mph during the run, although people who have tried to calculate the speed have come up with different results. Some say he never topped 85 mph, while others estimate the car peaked at 135 mph. Either way, it’s a fantastic film.

What a mess: Lebanon Valley Dragway flooded

| пятница, 31 июля 2009 г.

Lebanon Valley Dragway

We had some heavy rains come through here the other day, but nothing compared to those experienced in West Lebanon, where our home track of Lebanon Valley is located. About eight inches of rain overflowed the creek next to the track, leading to as much as eight feet of water pouring over both the dragstrip and the dirt track, causing widespread damage to the facilities and to the trailers and campers parked on the grounds. In the above picture – those white lines? Those are the Jersey barriers that mark the dragstrip. As of now, we know there’s damage to the shutdown area as well as to the area around the fuel depot. More pics and info at the classracer.com forums, and the local TV news covered the damage.

What a Lotus Sees During Nightmares

| среда, 22 июля 2009 г.

Since I posted that Hertz is renting the Exige and the Elise in Italy, I’ve had Lotus on the brain, and when I saw this clip, I couldn’t help but think about the little track toys being thrown in with these behemoths. Now, because of their incredibly nimble handling, the Elise and the Exige can generally hang with the big boys at the track. But “big,” like “heavy” and “fast,” is a relative term, and semi racing is one class where the British micro machines would definitely be out of their league. I imagine this is the kind of thing that wakes them up out of a sound slumber…

Best Comp of Rally Footage Ever?

| воскресенье, 19 июля 2009 г.

Ok, so I know I posted the highlights from the Irish Rally just a couple of days ago, but this comp just blew me away.  Nads forwarded it to me late last night, and I’ve probably watched it five times since then. The only complaint I have is that there should really be some racing engines in the mix, but the way all this classic in-car, crash and helicopter footage is stitched together—and the great pacing of the clip—lets me forgive that oversight. Enjoy.
